Japan is the only major industrial nation other than the United States to apply the death penalty. It last carried out executions in October 2008 when it hanged two inmates.

The Madagascan capital was deserted Thursday as citizens heeded a call by the mayor to turn it into a ghost town after anti-government protests that have left at least 68 people dead. Madagascar has been plagued by political unrest in the past. It suffered some of its worst violence after the 2001 presidential elections when president Ratsiraka refused to accept defeat by Ravalomanana.
