If Marvel were to reboot The Punisher movies..

This is how I would do it. (I posted this on other sites too like Comicvine, Facebook and Marvel.com)

Depiction of Captain Frank Castle in Vietnam

The movie kicks off in Vietnam, 1975. Apparently, not all troops pulled out of Vietnam on the 30th of April. Fire Base Valley Forge, 7 miles from the border of Cambodia. Lt. Frank Castle was one of the few Marines that got chosen for the Neo-Super Soldier project which was one of the government's atempt to recreate the super soldier serum in one of America's heroes back in WW2. Fire Base Valley Forge was a joint effort between the British, Canadians and the Americans. Among of the other soldiers that were brought to the base were Sgt. James Howlett and Sgt. Victor Creed. There are others on the list but Castle found out they both already super powers. Frank Castle was trained for 6 months in counter superhuman training and serum was given to him. Supervising the camp was Colonel Nick Fury who then tell the men who went through the secretive basic commando training that they were under the supervision of an international espionage and military joint corporation SHIELD under the observance of the UN. The serum given to Frank Castle slowed down the aging process but unknowingly to Frank Castle, many soldiers died to the testing of the serum. The serum seemed not to have any negative effects so the Colonel decided to take it himself. The serum was codenamed "Infinity".

A classic white Nick Fury would be cool but Nick Fury from the Ultimate Universe is much more feasible and looks better. Besides, all the other Marvel movies are using this version.

Maria Elizabeth Castle was a scientist working for ARPA ( Advanced Research Projects Agency) under the United States Armed Forces. She found out about the death of soldiers and marines and Vietnam due to the testing of the serum. She threatened SHIELD to bring this to the public so Colonel Nick Fury issued an order for the base to be relocated and close down any evidence in Vietnam. The base was then relocated to the North-South Vietnamese border under the surveillance of SHIELD and the KPA (Korean People's Army). However, she was still determined to bring it to public. During the relocation, the Fire Base was attacked by Viet Cong forces, after the NVA found out about their location. The whole cover was blowned up after the attempt of rape onto Vietnamese civilians by Sgt Victor Creed who then got into a fire fight with NVA and a fight with his brother, Sgt James Howlett. Both got caught by the Canadian Military Police and deported back to Canada with their fates unknown later on the "movie."

Depiction of Maria Elizabeth Castle (My version would be different from the comics. In the comics her history was never delved into. In my version she works under ARPA, a RND department of the United States Army and also doing RND under SHIELD)

During the attack of the NVA forces, only 20 out of 2000 troops survive. A handful of SEALs, SHIELD agents, Colonel Nick Fury and Lt Frank Castle. When Castle found out about the war crimes SHIELD did to American Marines and Soldiers he got pissed off and said Korea was his last thing and he will quit. Nick Fury then got him off quickly in return that he never expose what actually happened in 'Nam. Maria still insisted on going public but before she told the media about this, she was murdered by a group of mobsters in the streets of New York.

Castle who just got back in New York went furious and decided to kill every mobster involved with the murder. He then used skills that he learned during the Counter-Superhuman Commando training against the mobsters, using certain gadgetry who got from SHIELD and ARPA. It turns out that the men who murdered his wife was working for the Maggia family. One of them was Jimmy Russo. Now mentally disturbed, he decides to become the vigilante Punisher. Many cops loved him for killing criminals that have plagued the streets. But many also feared him as he was likened to a terrorist. He then went through his war of crime for 30 years until he found out something that changed his very life.

He found out that his wife was murdered by a black ops team under SHIELD due to the fact that she was about to tell the world the atrocities did by the US government, it's allies and SHIELD. Enraged, he decided to against the big guns, SHIELD. Castle then captured a few terrorist suspects that are wanted by the FBI, CIA and SHIELD. The 3 bodies needed to gain information concerning a few terror attacks that happened in New York, Chicago and an assassination attempt against president Barrack Obama. He demanded that he wants to meet up with top SHIELD and US Armed Forces commanders or else he will put the end to the life of the terrorist that were needed for interrogation.

Colonel Nick Fury does not knows about the war crimes committed in 'Nam as he was not in charge at that time. He decided to take care of Castle as he thought that it was SHIELD jurisdiction because they trained him to be part of Counter Superhuman Special Forces. He doesn't wants the public to know that American troops were still on Vietnam soil after 75. Colonel Nick Fury, now director of SHIELD sends out one of the few ex-Green Berets that survived the attack on Fire Base back in 'Nam, Lt. G.W. Bridge. After the war Bridge became a Muslim and insisted on using non-lethal ways to combat certain situations but it seemed liked this one forces him to use them. Castle then found out he was on an all out pursuit through out America against G.W. Bridge. The terrorist that Castle held hostage were either murdered, mutilated or saved by FBI and CIA agents.

G.W. Bridge by Marvel Comics

Under the pursuit of SHIELD is bad enough, but assassin Jigsaw who turns out to be Jimmy Russo's son decided to take the law into his hands too. He decided to become the Punisher too only difference is, he only wants to kill Castle as a revenge for his father. Jigsaw here is portrayed as a psychopath who has killed many people in order to lure Castle out. He was dishonorably discharged from the Army in '97. In my version, Jigsaw was a Gulf War veteran and one of the Rangers who survived the Battle of Mogadishu in '93. His life was saved by Malaysian peacekeeping troops in Somalia but was horribly disfigured and now mentally unstable. (Just to give a different take on Jigsaw)

Jigsaw by Marvel Comics (However the version that I want of him would be a gun trotting assassin, ex-military who uses sadistic methods and military techniques)

So while Castle was busy evading shots from SHIELD and didn't fire back as they were government operatives, he also had fight Jigsaw's men and shoot them back as they were criminals. So the fight ensues and Castle was apprehended. While Castle was being escorted, Bridge decided to talk to Castle. Castle tells him all about Vietnam and what happened there. How many soldiers died in the making of the serum. Bridge then tells him that it's not true and he is delusional until Castle convinces Bridge to look into the death of his wife and kids and look onto the evidence that she has gathered concerning the crimes.

Castle then gets sent to the Raft, a high security prison owned by SHIELD to contain Superhuman criminals and vigilantes that has caused trouble towards National and International security. In this universe, the Raft is looked down by the public like Guantanamo. While Castle was in prison awaiting trial. Bridge decided to go to Castle's base and to see if Castle was talking the truth. He then did a thorough research on Maria's evidence and found out the horrible things the government did to get the serum. The evidence is then forwarded to Nick Fury's office. Fury was surprised about what happened and decides to track down the people in charge with this. He then found out that a few Generals were involved and most of them have died to General causes. Nick Fury decides to bring the ones still alive to court.

Out of a sudden Jigsaw then attacks the raft in hopes to release Castle and kill Castle himself. G.W. Bridge in charge of Castle deploys a tactical team to combat them. Then, G.W. Bridge decides to do the craziest thing of his career. He lets go Frank Castle before Jigsaw's mercenaries and himself gets their hands on Castle. Nick Fury, feeling guilty decided to make report to the media that Castle has escaped the Raft and ended all pursuits on him.

Later in the "movie" Fury decides to meet up with Castle and decides to give Castle a job. Which leads to the next "movie" which in my idea would be a loose adaptation of the Mother Russia/Man of Stone arc. I'll write that one up later.

Tell me what you think. It's a mix of MAX and 616 all jumbled to make the whole thing interesting. I wanted to add Yorkie Mitchell somewhere but couldn't think of any.

Edit:Not Colonel Fury ordered the relocation of the camp from Vietnam to the Korean border but a General who was in charged of the project at that time. I'm going to rewrite this one with more detail and fill in plot holes.

  2. Visually the adaptation was great but unfortunately the plot was so minimal you start caring less about the character. So in my version I tried to make the character easier to relate to while touching certain social commentaries like the war crimes in Vietnam, government using brutal force against people and the trauma of Vietnam veterans.
